RESUMEN
La investigación, función sustantiva de las universidades y escuelas politécnicas ecuatorianas, requiere de un monitoreo sistemático de la información para evaluar sus resultados e impacto. En este proceso, que es bien controvertido en el mundo, aunar criterios sobre la información para la evaluación de la producción científica de los profesores ecuatorianos, es de vital importancia. A partir de una compilación, resultado de una investigación documental sobre la temática de estudio, se obtuvo que: La producción científica en Ecuador presenta un crecimiento exponencial, el cual puede estar motivado por el enfoque holístico que se le está dando a la investigación en las universidades. El uso de indicadores para medir la producción científica y evaluar los resultados de los profesores presentan una gran diversidad, que se basa tanto en aspectos bibliométricos de carácter científico, como estándares de gestión de la calidad. Los indicadores establecidos para la evaluación de los resultados de la investigación son limitados, si se tiene en cuenta el fortalecimiento de la investigación científica en las universidades, la diversidad de campos de investigación y de categorías docentes y científicas de los profesores universitarios; se proponen otros indicadores que permitirán contar con nuevas herramientas científicas necesarias para cuantificar los resultados de las investigaciones del profesor ecuatoriano, de una manera más objetiva y se facilitará la interpretación de sus resultados.

THE EVALUATION OF THE SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION OF THE ECUADORIAN UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR, A NEW PERSPECTIVE
ABSTRACT
Investigation as a substantive function of ecuadorian universities and polytechnics require a systematic monitoring of information for the effective evaluation of its results and impacts. This world´s controversial process unites criteria on information for the evaluation of scientific production of the Ecuadorian university teachers which is of great importance. Based on a compilation of the results of a documental investigation on this subject under study, it was gathered that: The scientific production in Ecuador presents an exponential growth, which may be motivated by the holistic approach that is being given to research in universities. The use of indicators to measure scientific production and evaluate the results of teachers present a great diversity, which is based on both bibliometric aspects of a scientific nature, and quality management standards. The established indicators for the evaluation of the results of investigation are limited, taking into account the strength of scientific investigation in universities, the diversity of the fields of investigation, the categories and level of science of the university teachers. Other indicators that would permit the use of new scientific tools that are necessary for the quantification of results of the investigations of the Ecuadorian university teachers are proposed in a more objective way and is aimed at facilitating the interpretation of their results.
