RESUMEN

El artículo forma parte de una investigación más amplia, acerca a sus lectores a la obra musical de Sony Boy, músico hijo de inmigrantes caribeños llegados a la Isla de la Juventud.⁽¹⁾ Cuba, a inicios del siglo XX. Su obra constituye un referente de interculturalidad por su fusión singular de los rítmos afrocaribeños y lo mejor de los géneros musicales cubanos, razones por las cuales es considerada parte del patrimonio cultural local. Esos elementos quedan demostrados a través del trabajo, en cuyo desarrollo se utilizaron herramientas como la entrevista, la historia de vida y la búsqueda bibliográfica para conformar un análisis sobre la influencia de su música en las tradiciones culturales del territorio insular pinero. Exponente vivo del proceso de transculturación que aun tiene lugar en el área del llamado Gran Caribe, iniciado con el cruce de etnias y culturas tras la llegada y posterior conquista y colonización europea de las Antillas y demás tierras circundantes, Sony Boy es ejemplo de un proceso de características muy peculiares. Hijo del Caribe que lleva en la sangre mezclada de sus antecesores y en la suya propia, todo el ardor y la diversidad de una cultura mestiza en la cual perviven al unísono las  raíces originarias, europeas, africanas y de otras latitudes geográficas, ofrece al mundo la riqueza de una cultura auténtica como la de los pueblos caribeños.

SONY BOY. MUSIC, INTERCULTURALITY AND CARIBBEAN IDENTITY

ABSTRACT

The article, part of a more ample investigation, brings its readers closer to the musical work of Sony Boy, a musician son of caribbean immigrants who arrived on the Isle of Youth⁽¹⁾ Cuba, at the beginning of the 20th century. His works constitutes a benchmark of interculturality due to its unique fusion of afro-caribbean rhythms and the best of cuban musical genres, reasons for which it is considered part of the local cultural heritage. These elements are demonstrated through the work, in the development of which tools such as the interview, the life history and the bibliographic search were used to form an analysis of the influence of his music on the cultural traditions of the island territory. Exponent alive of the process of transculturation that still takes place in the area of ​​the so-called Greater Caribbean, initiated with the crossing of ethnic groups and cultures after the arrival and subsequent european conquest and colonization of the Antilles and other surrounding lands. Sony Boy is an example of a process with very peculiar characteristics. Son of the Caribbean who carries in the mixed blood of his ancestors and his own, all the ardor and diversity of a hybrid culture in which the original roots, European, African and other geographical latitudes survive in unison, he offers the world the richness of an authentic culture like that of the caribbean peoples.
