Resumen. 

La historia de la medicina tradicional mexicana es muy extensa. Se sabe que los antiguos pobladores de México tenían conocimiento de las propiedades curativas de diversas plantas. Hoy en día, a pesar de los grandes avances farmacéuticos, se sigue recurriendo a los remedios herbolarios para mitigar alguna enfermedad, principalmente en las áreas vulnerables donde los servicios de salud y medicamentos no están al alcance de todos. Sin embargo; solo algunas plantas han sido estudiadas y se tiene el conocimiento de sus principios activos, así como de sus propiedades farmacológicas, terapéuticas y efectos toxicológicos. Es en este contexto donde la etnofarmacología busca recopilar y preservar los conocimientos de las distintas plantas utilizadas en la medicina tradicional mediante la investigación con el fin de racionalizar su uso.

Abstract.

The history of traditional Mexican medicine is very long. It is known that the ancient inhabitants of Mexico had knowledge about the healing properties of plants. Today, despite the great pharmaceutical advances, herbal remedies are still being used to mitigate some diseases, mainly in vulnerable areas where health services and medicines are not available to everyone. Nevertheless, only some plants have been studied and there is knowledge of their active ingredients, as well as their pharmacological, therapeutic, and toxicological effects.
