LA MUJER ORIENTAL EN LA NARRATIVA DE EDITH CHAHIN

Resumen

Este artículo explora la visión de la mujer oriental, árabe o musulmana en dos obras de Edith Chahin, Nahima: la larga historia de mi madre y Fadua: la impetuosa doncella de Homs, cuyo contexto se remota a la Siria otomana, bajo las leyes de la sociedad patriarcal. Este artículo tiene como objetivo corregir los estereotipos negativos, que toman dichas tradiciones como referencia para identificar la mujer oriental comparada con la occidental. La metodología que proponemos para su elaboración es analítica y cualitativa, que se basará en el análisis narratológico y semiótico de ambas novelas, y así de la interpretación de los elementos ofrecidos por la autora, y su comparación con la realidad de la mujer árabe y musulmana. Para llegar a unos resultados bien determinados, y cumplir con el objetivo establecido, sería necesario consultar una bibliografía básica y otra variada. De este modo, el estudio de la mujer oriental a través de estas novelas literarias de Chahin centradas en testimonios reales, subraya el alcance de la literatura en corregir los malentendidos y describir las cosas como son, y por consiguiente cómo deberían ser.

THE ORIENTAL WOMAN IN THE NARRATIVE OF EDITH CHAHIN

Abstract

This article explores the oriental woman’s approach, either Arab or Muslim, in two Edith Chahin’s extense works: Nahima: my mother’s long history and Fadua: the impetuous damsel from Homs which historical context dates from the ottoman Syria, under the laws of a patriarchal society. The main objective of this article is to eliminate and refute the negative stereotypes, which are approached in different social traditions as a way to identify the oriental woman compared to the occidental woman. The methodology we propose for its elaboration is analytical and qualitative, which will be based on the narratological and semiotic analysis of both novels, and thus the interpretation of the elements offered by the author, and its comparison with the reality of Arab and Muslim women. In order to arrive at well-defined results, and to meet the stated objective, it would be necessary to consult a basic and a varied bibliography. Thus, the study of Eastern women through these literary novels of Chahin centered on real testimonies, underscores the extent of literature in correcting misunderstandings and describing things as they are, and therefore as they should be.
