Andreu Mas-Colell, (1944-)
Barcelonés, estudia en la Facultad de
Ciencias Económicas en Barcelona y en la de Valladolid. Se traslada a
la Universidad de Minnesota con una Beca de la Fundación Juan March
(1968-1972)
, donde obtiene el doctorado en agosto de 1972. Trabaja en la
Universidad de California en Berkeley (1972-1981) y en la Harvard University
(1981-1995). Desde entonces está en la Universidad Pompeu Fabra.
Mas-Colell es uno de los lÃderes del movimiento neo-walrasiano.
Trabaja en la teorÃa del Equilibrio General
Competitivo. En los años setenta
prueba la existencia de un equilibrio competitivo sin utilizar los axiomas de
completitud y de la transitividad de las preferencias de los consumidores.
Utiliza el cálculo diferencial para explorar las condiciones necesarias para la
existencia de equilibrio en una gran variedad de contextos, tanto equilibrios
walrasianos como de Nash o de Radner. En 1986 demuestra la existencia de un
equilibrio walrasiano en una economÃa genérica de infinitas dimensiones, lo
que ha sido considerado un paso definitivo.
Es coautor de un manual de MicroeconomÃa (1995) de
inmediato éxito y reconocimiento mundial.
