Economista francés, obtuvo el
Premio Nobel de Economía en 1983 por haber incorporado nuevos métodos analíticos a la teoría económica y por su rigurosa reformulación de la teoría del equilibrio general.
Nacido en Calais, Francia, el 4 de julio de 1921, Debreu, que adquirió la nacionalidad estadounidense en 1975, interrumpió sus estudios de Matemáticas para enrolarse en el Ejército francés tras la invasión de Normandía por los Aliados en 1944, y los finalizó tras el conflicto.
Influido por la obra de Léon Walras, centró sus investigaciones en economía. Se marchó a Estados Unidos en 1950 con una beca Rockefeller y hasta 1960 trabajó en la Cowles Comission for Research in Economics en la Universidad de Chicago. En 1961 investigó en el Center for Advanced Study in the Beahavoiral Sciences en Stanford, fue profesor asociado en la Universidad de Yale y en 1962 pasó a la Universidad de Berkeley hasta su jubilación en el año 1991.
Falleció el 31 de diciembre de 2004.
